Department of Neonatology

Characteristics

Department of Neonatology is situated in Building U, Thomayer University Hospital. It is the Intermediate Perinatology Center concentrating newborns older than 30 weeks of gestation. It is the largest intermediate center in the Czech Republic with 9 intensive care beds, 14 intermediate and 31 standard beds. NICU offers the whole range of neonatal intensive care including pre- and post-operative care. Because of our breastfeeding program Thomayer University Hospital received international WHO and UNICEF Baby Friendly Hospital certification. Department of Neonatology is one of 2 centers in the Czech Republic concentrating patients with facial cleft defects for early operation program.

Outpatient department

  • Follow-up of high-risk newborns

Diagnostic services

  • Full range of diagnostic services including biochemistry, genetics, X-rays, CT, MRI, ultrasound, aEEG, EEG, ECG

Therapeutic services

  • Intensive and critical care including conventional and non-conventional artificial ventilation, circulatory support and parenteral nutrition

Education:

Department of Neonatology provides teaching for medical students from medical schools of Charles University Prague.

Research

Research is focused on inflammatory markers, infectious diseases and nutrition problems of the newborn.
