Clinic of Urology 3rd Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Thomayer University Hospital

Characteristics

The goal of our clinic is to provide excellent patient care and comprehensive treatment in the area of urology. Furthermore, our medical staff is involved and participates in various research projects. Special attention is paid to continuous education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and doctors.

Our clinic belongs to the top ten high-volume centers of urology in the Czech Republic; our specialists are nationally recognized experts in the fields of urologic oncology, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), neurourology/urodynamics (bladder disorders), reconstructive surgery, male sexual dysfunction, male infertility and mini-invasive surgery.

As the National Center of Testicular Cancer is based in our hospital, the experience in the management of this disease is high above standard. Similarly, the large body of experience in the treatment and management of kidney transplant patients is the result of our longstanding very close cooperation with the main transplant center in the Czech Republic, with more than 200 kidney transplants performed per year.

Apart from open (radical removal of bladder or kidney, etc.), laparoscopic (radical nephrectomy, prostatectomy, etc.), endoscopic (TURP, or transurethral resection of prostate;  TURBT, or transurethral resection of bladder tumor, etc) and percutaneous (PCNL, or percutaneous removal of a kidney stone) procedures, our clinic offers some of the new treatment options. A new technique of treating BPH with the green light laser (photoselective vaporisation of prostate) has been recently introduced and become a routine procedure in our clinic. Treatment of male incontinence with an adjustable transobturator male sling is performed in selected cases. Furthermore, our clinic pursues very close cooperation with two prominent infertility clinics and participates in a project designed to treat male infertility.

Urological care is provided in four outpatient clinics, one of which provides a 24-hour emergency urological service. These facilities are situated in the same building as the urology ward with 30 beds as well as an Intensive Care Unit with 4 beds reserved exclusively for patients with urology-related complaints. Two very modern operating theaters are available for urological team 24 hours 7 days a week in the same building. In the specialised out-patient urology clinics, investigations and procedures are carried out to help diagnose and treat a wide range of urological problems; these clinics are situated on the ground floor in the same building (B4) as the main inpatient ward.

We are well aware that urological conditions may be most distressing. Our staff is committed to ensuring every patient is treated with utmost dignity and respect and providing them with the highest quality of care in a safe and comfortable environment.
