The Clinic of Thoracic Surgery 3^rd Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Thomayer University Hospital is a unique separate specialized department of this type in the Czech Republic, together with the Pneumology Clinic 1^st Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Thomayer University Hospital, and other health care facilities, makes up a model Centre of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery. The clinic consists of an inpatient ward, an outpatient unit, operating theaters, outpatient department of thoracic surgery (B1 Building) and outpatient unit of breast diseases (A1 Building). The inpatient ward has seven monitored beds, seven beds of intermediary care, and 40 beds for thoracic surgery patients including 6 rehabilitation beds.

Three operating theaters are equipped with custom-made air conditioning technology suitable for both super aseptic surgical procedures and procedures in patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. All standard diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of thoracic surgery and mammology are performed, with preference given to mini-invasive surgery.

The Clinic cooperates in diagnostics, treatment and postoperative care of patients with respiratory diseases, tuberculosis, and multidrug-resistance tuberculosis with Pneumology Clinic 1^st Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Thomayer University Hospital.

• Thoracic puncture, lymph node extirpation, parasternal mediastinotomy mediastinoscopy and video mediastinoscopy, thoracoscopy, videothoracoscopy and video-assisted thoracoscopy, open-biopsy method of lung biopsy
• Surgical treatment without resection
• Thoracic drainage, drainage with rib resection, debridement, fibrinolysis, pleurostomy, decortication of lung, pleurectomy, empyema thoracic management, thoracoplastic operations, sympathectomy, splanchnicectomy, diaphragm surgery, chest wall stabilization, plastic and reconstructive surgery including pictus excavatum treatment, mediastinal tumours extirpation, actute pyo-mediastinitis drainage, thyreoidal surgery
• Surgical treatment with resection
• Atypical resections, pulmonary segmentectomy, lobectomy, bilobectomy, pneumonectomy, trachea and large respiratory tract surgery, radical mediastinal lymphadenoctomy
• Breast surgery
• Radical breast resection (mastectomy), breast reduction, sentinel lymph-node extirpation, axilla exenteration, diagnostic excisions and extirpations
• Other surgical procedures in of patients with respiratory disease [chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), asthma, tuberculosis].

Education

The Clinic is involved in the education of 3rd Faculty of Charles University students and in postgraduate education of physicians in the area of thoracic surgery.
