Clinic of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine 1st Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Thomayer University Hospital (CP) is composed of two standard bed wards, and an outpatient department consisting of Emergency and several Specialized outpatient units. The total number of beds available is 33. Treatment in DP is provided to children from neonatal age up through adolescence to 18 years.

The main groups of diseases treated in the CP include those involving the lungs (asthma, pneumonias, and pleuropneumonias, interstitial lung processes, congenital lung defects, etc.), kidneys, urinary tract (inflammation of the kidney, urinary tract infections, etc.), gastrointestinal tract (inflammatory bowel disease, diarrheal diseases, impaired liver function, etc.), and the cardiovascular system (myocardial inflammation, arrhythmias, etc.).

Other reason for hospitalization of children include failure to thrive, breastfeeding-related problems, protracted jaundice or respiratory problems in the newborn, abdominal pain, headache, collapses, etc. In cooperation with the Department of Pediatric Neurology, we treat serious states of decompensated epilepsy, febrile seizures, and infection of central nervous system (meningitis, facial nerve palsy during Borrelia infections, etc.).

The CP has a large body of experience with pediatric phtiseology, and runs a specialized center for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric tuberculosis. The CP is equipped with very modern instruments and technology used for rapid diagnosis and therapy of a broad spectrum of diseases (ultrasound, flexible bronchoscopy, indirect calorimetry, pulmonary functional assessment, etc.).

The outpatient unit of the CP providing care in several pediatric specialties (see list below) and operates on a 24-hour basis.

The clinic´s staff fully meets the needs of children of all age groups and provides appropriate care with the aim to satisfy the diseased children and their parents´ needs.

Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

  • Comprehensive examination – motor and mental status assessment, growth assessment, differential diagnosis and therapy of fever
  • Lumbar puncture and analysis of laboratory findings in cerebrospinal fluid, management of infections affecting the central nervous system
  • Abdominal ultrasound, pleural space ultrasound, CNS ultrasound (in children with open anterior fontanel)
  • Assessment by a cardiologist using ECG, ECHO and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)
  • Assessment of the kidney, diagnosis and therapy of urinary tract diseases
  • Chest X-ray, spirometry
  • Pleural puncture and/or drainage
  • Bronchoscopy under local or general anesthesia
  • Diagnosis, comprehensive care and therapy of various forms of tuberculosis
  • Endocrinologic assessment, functional tests and therapy of endocrinopathies
  • Allergologic examination – tests, laboratory investigations, desensitization, immunotherapy
  • Investigation and therapy of immune system diseases
  • Gastroenterologic investigation and follow-up of children with nutritional problems, malabsorption, inflammatory bowel disease, endoscopic investigations (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, etc.)

Intensive care and resuscitation unit (ICRU)

  • Artificial lung ventilation – conventional, oscillating ventilation, ventilation with a mixture of NO (nitrogen oxide), non-invasive ventilation
  • Advanced PiCCO-type hemodynamic monitoring – cardiac output and extravascular lung water measurement, measurement of systemic vascular resistance, etc.
  • Top-level resuscitation care – ALV (artificial lung ventilation), invasive monitoring, central vessels cannulation, circulatory support, continuous EEG monitoring
  • Metabolic monitoring – respiratory quotient measurement, actual energy requirement – detailed metabolic studies
  • Isolation and resuscitation care in patients with highly contagious diseases (e.g, serious complications of chickenpox, etc.)

Education

The CP provides theoretical and practical education for medical students at Charles University Medical School. Postgraduate education programs run by the clinic include pediatrics, pediatric pneumology, pediatrics intensive care, and so on. Each year, the clinic runs courses in pediatrics for postgraduate medical students as well as postgraduate courses for nurses.


Science

Research projects carried by the CP focus on the diagnosis and characterization of pathogenic mechanisms of mitochondrial disorders (grants by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic).
