Center for Cardiovascular Prevention 1st Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Thomayer University Hospital

Characteristics

The Center for Cardiovascular Prevention is a specialist clinic providing comprehensive care in the management of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose metabolism/diabetes, obesity, smoking) as part of primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Particular emphasis is placed on an individualized integrated approach in an effort to estimate total cardiovascular risk based on the presence of other risk factors and preclinical signs of atherosclerosis.

The Center for Cardiovascular Prevention has established close cooperation with all other centers and departments of Thomayer University Hospital, in particular with the Department of Neurology of the Postgraduate Medical School/Thomayer University Hospital and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

The Center´s head is involved in postgraduate training in cardiology, internal medicine, and public health.

Science and research

Research projects carried out by the Center for Cardiovascular Prevention are focused mostly on hypertension and detection of preclinical atherosclerosis. Another line of research examining the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease is specifically designed to establish the prevalence of major risk factors in a randomly selected population sample. The center has been involved in long-term multicenter clinical trials in hypertension, dyslipidemia, and prevention of cardiovascular disease, and has served as the national coordination center in some of these projects.

In addition to research grants awarded by Czech agencies, the center participates in and coordinates projects run and funded by the European Commission of the European Union, the European Society of Hypertension, and the European Society of Cardiology.
