Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine

Characteristics:

The Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine is a fully equipped department covering all field of pathology including state-of-the-art methods of molecular genetics and immunology. The department has long become synonymous with a top neuropathological diagnostic center with special emphasis on dementia and neurodegeneration. It is well equipped with modern diagnostic devices for protein analysis and uses diagnostic techniques in molecular biology. Its staff is well experienced in molecular genetic methods. It has specialized not only in research into, and treatment of Alzheimer disease but, also, in other neurodegenerative disorders as well, and has obtained a large body of experience in the diagnosis and study of prion diseases in programs supervised by The National Reference Laboratory for Diagnostics of Human Prion Diseases for more than 10 years. Its other areas of expertise include oncopathology and pathology of the respiratory system.

National Reference Laboratory for Human Prion Diseases

The National Reference Laboratory for Diagnostics of Human Prion Diseases has a large body of experience in the diagnosis and study of human prion diseases for more than 10 years. The laboratory provides services to the hospital and other out-of-hospital health facilities in the Czech Republic.

Education

The department´s staff are involved in education and training programs for Charles University medical students and supervise PhD programs in biomedicine.

Research

Besides Czech grant research projects, our department participates in European Framework Programs.

Accreditation and certification

The department is authorized and registered by the National Center for Authorization of Clinical Laboratories (Národní autorizační středisko klinických laboratoří, or NASKL in Czech), advanced audit II (NASKL II).
