Department of Neonatology

Characteristics:

The Department of Neonatology is an intermediate perinatology care center providing care to newborns older than 30 weeks of gestation. It is the largest center of this kind in the Czech Republic with 9 intensive care beds, 22 intermediate care, and 33 standard care beds. Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provides the whole range of neonatal intensive care including pre- and postoperative care. Based on our breastfeeding program, Thomayer Hospital was awarded the international World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Fund (UNICEF) Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) certificate. The Department of Neonatology is one of the 2 centers in the Czech Republic admitting patients with facial cleft defects for an early surgery program.

Intensive and critical care including conventional and non-conventional mechanical ventilation, circulatory support, and parenteral nutrition.

Education

The Department of Neonatology provides training for medical students from all 3 medical schools of Charles University in Prague.

Science and Research

Research is focused on respiratory pathology, infectious diseases, and nutrition problems of the newborn.
