Characteristics

The clinic of Respiratory Medicine 1st Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Thomayer University Hospital is one of the largest departments of the Thomayer Hospital with 62 beds for emergencies including 4 beds of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) (G1 Building) and 35 beds for long-term treatment of tuberculosis patients including a unit for treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (K Building). It is equipped with advanced technology enabling proper and rapid diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of respiratory diseases. Common diagnoses seen include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer, pneumonia, pleurisy and empyema, tuberculosis and sarcoidosis, and other interstitial lung diseases. The clinic cooperates closely with the Clinic of Thoracic Surgery 3rd Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Thomayer University Hospital in the diagnosis and treatment of various lung diseases  including lung cancer.

All our physicians, nurses and other staff do their best not only to solve the medical problems but also to offer emotional and social support to patients and their families. Our philosophy is high-standard medical care with a personal approach to the patient.

  • Oxygen assessment and oxygen testing for long-term oxygen therapy
  • Pleural aspiration and drainage

  • Bronchoscopy including interventional bronchscopy under local or general anesthesia
  • Sleep and hypoventilation investigations and treatment
  • Non-invasive and invasive ventilation and critical care
  • Diagnosis and treatment of immune disorders

Education

The clinic serves as a training center for students of the 1st Faculty of the Charles University and for postgraduate students preparing for board examinations in internal medicine, respiratory medicine and allergology, and in clinical immunology. Postgraduate education programs for nurses in the field of intensive care and bronchology are also available at our clinic.


Research

Our research focuses on interstitial lung diseases, especially their genetics and immunology, difficult-to-treat asthma, COPD, lung cancer and tuberculosis. In addition to Czech research grant projects, our clinic participates in European Union Framework Programs.
